Research the exit before the entry

Memecoins can move quickly, but the price on screen is only one part of the risk.

Confirm the exact asset

Ticker symbols and names can be copied. Verify the contract address using the project’s official channels and a reputable chain explorer. Check the network, creation date, verified source information, and whether the contract can be upgraded, paused, taxed, minted, or otherwise controlled.

Risk-first checklist
  • Exact contract address and network verified
  • Liquidity depth and lock status reviewed
  • Largest holders and connected wallets examined
  • Contract owner permissions understood
  • Realistic exit size and slippage considered

Measure concentration and liquidity

Market capitalization does not tell you how much can be sold near the quoted price. Review liquidity pools, order-book depth where relevant, trading volume quality, and holder concentration. Exclude known exchange, burn, and liquidity addresses carefully before interpreting the distribution.

Assume liquidity can change

A pool that looks sufficient now can shrink. Large holders can sell, incentives can expire, and market makers can step away. Estimate the effect of your own order and test whether your exit assumption survives a stressed market.

Evaluate the quality of attention

Look beyond total mentions. Repeated posts from newly created accounts, identical language, undeclared promotions, and follower spikes may indicate manufactured activity. Organic attention tends to include varied discussion, credible community history, and engagement that is not dominated by a few accounts.

Popularity can explain volatility. It does not remove contract, concentration, or liquidity risk.

Create an invalidation plan

Define what would make the thesis wrong: a liquidity threshold, contract change, holder transfer, failed catalyst, or break in price structure. Decide position size and maximum acceptable loss in advance. Never rely on the ability to exit instantly in a thin market.
